2002  Summer Institute

The Berkeley Foundation for Opportunities in Information Technology (BFOIT) will offer a two-week program aimed at introducing youth to computer science and the university environment on the University of California, Berkeley campus from August 6 to 17. This program focuses on women and members of ethnic groups that are historically underrepresented in the information technology fields.

The approximately twenty-five selected students will participate in a series of workshops and classes led by university faculty and industry representatives. In the core class, the students will learn some fundamentals of computer science by completing a computer-programming project. Other sessions will offer a variety of independent sessions, including the use of computer applications, web site design, and career and education information.

The site is readily accessible by either BART or AC Transit busses. Lunch will be provided each day. The program is scheduled for 9 AM to 4 PM each day, with an hour of optional computer lab time available both before and after the regular program.

BFOIT operates a number of other programs to broaden opportunities for underrepresented groups, such as SAT preparation courses from Kaplan. Graduates of the summer program willbe encouraged to participate in these other activities.

The program is open to students who have completed one or more years of high school. The ideal candidate has an interest and some familiarity with computers (manipulation of files, the Internet, perhaps some simple programming) but not an in-depth knowledge of programming (such as two years using a sophisticated programming language).

[T]he program was very good and beneficial to me. I have a computer at home but I really didn't know too much about them. In fact I was kind of computer phobic. But now I feel comfortable with computers and perhaps I will pursue a degree in CS [computer science]. Education is priceless.
