Consortium
for Educational Opportunities in Computing
BFOIT
is assisting the Computer Science Division of U.C. Berkeley in constructing
a Bay Area Consortium for Educational Opportunities in Computing,
which will work to identify promising potential computer professionals,
particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and help them
achieve their educational goals.
The
Bay Area has outstanding public colleges and universities, but it
is not easy for students, particularly disadvantaged ones, to determine
an optimal strategy.
Our
idea of the consortium is this: Each institution would appoint a
representative and these people would maintain contact, primarily
through email. They would try to become better acquainted with all
the available programs and ways that we might work together, in
an effort to offer to applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds
a relatively seamless spectrum of options. Thus, we would be able
to make multiple recommendations to each student based on his or
her record and ambitions. This will enable us to continue to work
with the student and the selected institution through training,
application, admission, matriculation, and on to graduation. The
consortium, with foundation support, could also provide to participants
services such as individual mentors, summer programs, and assistance
in transferring among schools.
