Workshops

In order to improve students’ potential for admission to college, BFOIT offers a number of workshops. We primarily reach out to the graduates of our summer institute for participation in these events. 

For example, BFOIT offers scholarships for SAT preparation courses to the students. This is critical to strengthening their applications because students from disadvantaged backgrounds often score lower on standardized tests compared to students who can afford such training. Through an agreement with Kaplan, BFOIT pays less than 50% of the list price for the standard SAT prep courses - a significant cost saving.

BFOIT also assists the students with their admission applications to public universities in the Bay Area by providing information on the application and financial aid processes. One workshop, in particular, focuses on development of the students’ personal essays, as a means for them to demonstrate their background, skills, and value that may not be apparent from their transcripts. Because BFOIT utilizes volunteers and pro bono resources from the schools, we are able to conduct these workshops for little cost.
