BFOIT Final Evaluations August 16, 2002

What has it meant for you to participate in BFOIT’s Summer Institute?

  1. It meant a lot to me because it taught me things I wanted to learn and it changed the ways I look at computers.
  2. It meant a lot to me because I learned a lot that I never thought about learning.
  3. It has really been an honor to be here among all these great people. I feel very special that I was chosen to participate and learn a new craft.
  4. It has meant a lot to me. I have learned a lot of new information that will really help me with my future. I have learned a lot from people who have gone down the roads that I will soon go down.
  5. It has meant that I could participate in something beneficial to me. It has also meant that I got to interact with people just as interested in computers, and exposure to college things. Another thing is working with professionals or college students.
  6. Being able to participate in BFOIT has really meant a lot to me. Even though the program was 2 weeks long it will last with me for my whole life time. Even though I’m a minority there are still people out there to help boost me up. I got to learn java program, HTML, and plentiful information through speakers and presentations. This program has changed my life. Now instead of sitting in front of a television, I’m now sitting in front of a computer, programming, doing hyper text language and improving my path to my future dream, to college and success in life.
  7. Attending the BFOIT program has encouraged me to continue to pursue engineering and to overcome any obstacles in my way (female & minority). *Please continue this program so that I & others can take part in BFOIT and
  8. It made me feel like I was smarter than all my friends but I am not.
  9. I was very glad I got to be part of BFOIT. I really loved JAVA, but did not feel that great about HTML. It wasn’t because I already learned it, but the teacher. She did not know her stuff.
  10. This has been the best experience with computer grafix & general technology.  I just want to take the time to thank everyone who got me here & everyone who took times out of their busy lives to help me learn html & some java. You have gotten me instructed on furthering my knowledge in java because BFOIT got me very interested in gaming. Thank you
  11. I truly believe that this program has helped change my life and made me believe that I am capable of anything I set my mind to. It has helped me to be able to be patient with myself and overcome the challenges along the way. I believe that BFOIT has opened a new road filled w/opportunities for me!  Thanks, Again and I hope a program like this can keep changing lives like it did mine!!
  12. It meant to me a lot – I learn a lot of stuff – the speakers were helpful- one teachers were nice – I like – one (j)alities
  13. Participating in BFOIT to me has meant a lot. By coming here this summer, I learned that I am more intelligent than I think I am. And that feels good. =)
  14. Learn new technology & computer science skills, get an in-depth understanding about information technology.
  15. It has meant a lot. Especially cause out of all the people who applied and I was chosen.
  16. It has taught me a lot about college and how fun technology is.
  17. This program really meant a lot to me, I really appreciate my coming here. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to participate in the program.
  18. My computer teacher told me about BFOIT. The thing that surprised me about BFOIT was that it was real. Whenever I join programs like this, they are very easy or boring but when I came for a week to BFOIT I told myself everything is new to me. I started to learn things that I never though I would learn.
  19. It meant catching up and getting ahead in CS and an opportunity not to pass by. This was a privilege because I was chosen to be a student. It definitely meant more resources and acquiring more connections. You get to meet new people and teach others what you know, and the speakers pass on examples for us to follow in life. It’s being prepared.

What is the single most beneficial part of the program for you?

1.      The best thing I benefit out off was HTML. It was cool, graphics, cars pics, links, Internet, AND, I got to meet new GIRLS in this program (this was from a female student- Dara Ayeoung- repeat).

2.      I think the Html because I didn’t No nothing about that

3.      The most beneficial part of the program for me was the information about college. That will really help me out in the future.

4.      The most beneficial part of the program to me was talking with Barbara Austin. She taught me a lot about how to get into college and about financial aid. I used to be scared that I wasn’t going to be able to get into a good college because of money, but now I know that it is VERY possible.

5.      The single most beneficial part would have to be the overall experience. It gave me a chance to experience something different. Learning other things such as Java was hard but felt good about completing the Tic Tac Toe game.

6.      learning JAVA was really beneficial. I’m planning on majoring in Computer Science and with this program, it gave me a taste of everything I wanted to know. The technological world today is growing massive and by learning programming I get that extra step in achieving in the real big computer world.

7.      It has given me both making new friends

8.       inspiration and the academic/technical preparation to enter the engineering & comp sci field.

9.      Learning Java & coding in HTML

10.  That teachers help me a lot – especially farah – she really help him a lot – I am really Glad – to have her as a teacher

11.  I can’t really single one thing out because this program has been beneficial as a whole from the programming to the free lunches to the speakers and to the HTML. I feel very lucky to be given this opportunity to take my education to the next level.

12.  The guest speakers were the most beneficial part of the program for me. From them I learned so much so early. It was really motivating to here from the women in technology. It made me feel like I would have a place in technology too.

13.  Gain the basic skills of HTML & Java. I felt I have learned the technology/skill that can be applied to my future.

14.  I now have something that will look really good on my college application and I know how to use Java and HTML.

15.  The speakers because they said a lot about how to be successful and get into college.

16.  Well I was beneficial in everything that was done in the program ie the speakers were wonderful, the teaching of programming, the HTML class and also “the food.”

17.  The most beneficial part of the program for me was HTML, JAVA and the speaker. I love or enjoy all these things.

18.  Learning how to program in JAVA and working as a volunteer to tutor the other students.

Would you recommend the program to your friends? Why or why not?

1.      Yes because it changes the ways that people look at computers and programming.

2.      Yes because I didn’t no how to make a web page or how to program anything

3.      I would recommend this program to my friends, but only the dedicated ones.

4.      Yes, I would recommend the program to my friends. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the field of computer science or engineering or even to the people who are not sure if that’s even what they want to do. You really learn a lot of new and useful information about computers AND about life! This is a really good program.

5.      In a way yes if they were interested and because it was a good, positive experience I would recommend them. But for my friends who don’t have the same interest I would mention it, and if they were as dedicated or interested in it like the people here, then they can join themselves.

6.      Yes. This program has changed my life and helped me deeply. It has given me both inspiration and preparation.

7.      Yes. Attending the JAVA & HTML class here is easier than attending my computer class at school because there are only boys (at school) and worst, the classes are small. Here I feel more comfortable and participate more. I like the presentation where we shared what we learned.

8.      Yes, because it would be a good program 4 them and they would learn a lot out of it and they will have fun.

9.      Yes, I would love my brother to be part of BFOIT. I believe he will learn my essential technicals but also social skills that will benefit him in life

10.  Yes I already have told 3 family members & friends that are interested in joining.

11.  Yes, I will because it’s very helpful – you get to learn a lot of stuff.

12.  I would definitely recommend this program to my friends because I know they will be able to learn just as much as me.

13.  Yes I would recommend BFOIT to my friends. This program teaches kids things they might not learn again in their entire lives.

14.  Yes. I wish I was informed about this program earlier when I started high school because the information provided by the program were very valuable to success no matter if it’s in computer science or college preparation.

15.  Yes, If they really like dealing with computers this is the program to be in.

16.  Yes because it was fun and I met a lot of new people.

17.  Sure I will recommend the program to my friends because my coming here alone looks like eating all the good meat without sharing with others. So I will want my friend to come join me eat the meat.

18.  Yes, because my friends will learn a lot of things about computer and Bfoit is a very great program.

19.  Definitely because everything is useful and hard to get outside the program in a short amount of time. Good learning experience.

What part of the program would you change? What is your suggestion to do it better?

1.      I would get more help, more people to help because a lot of people needed help at the same time.

2.      I would just change the long speeches. Make the speeches shorter

3.      What I would change about the program is all the speakers. I think the time spent here is better spent planning our own successful careers not listening to others talking about theirs.

4.      Well, even though I really enjoyed everything about the program, I would probably lower the amount of speakers we have. Don’t get me wrong, I really liked all of the speakers, but sometimes it was hard to sit there for a long time just listening to people talk. No more than one maybe even two every once in a while, a day.

5.      I would add something on the lines of graphic art. Like people who create games. Or things more on the art side. If we had a speaker about that, it would have been better. Overall I liked the program and thought it was fine the way it was.

6.      make the program longer so there won’t be the rush and more free time and everyone would finish. *I would like to volunteer to be the teacher of HTML

7.      a) contact info & background info of speakers for participants

b) contact info of participants like before attendance ask for consent to share email then print one page for everyone

c) to encourage more participation call on us (it’s okay to make it a little school-like)

d) cut off, can’t read it

e) type out the certificate like measure out space & type on word. It’s not really hard. This is a computer (cut off, can’t read the rest)

f) define the different disciplines of engineering

8.      The Programming part to make it simpler

9.      I would change the HTML class. I believe you need to have a more experience teacher, who knows everything they want to teach. Also, lower the number of speakers

10.  It shouldn’t be harder

11.  I think the only change I would ask for is to cut the speakers’ time…they were really cool and everything but some of the talks were really long and its hard to focus after a certain period of time.

12.  My suggestion for BFOIT is to have more sites! More campuses that offer BFOIT….Expand!

13.  The intense schedule made this program a bit stressful. I suggest free-time for lunch (w/o speaker) or a half-hour break after lunch (w/ speaker).

14.  I would change the time scheduling, give a little freetime and make the java a little more clear.

15.  All the speakers. Not too many in one day.

16.  I think the part of the program that I will recommend changes is java. My reason is that many students tried learning programming but they were not successful but they tried. I will want programming to be taught to the understanding of everyone.

17.  I think that the JAVA part was very hard and it went too fast. I think that it should be teach a little slow and more example.

18.  The speakers should be spread out. It’s still good to have as many as possible, but when they all go at once, it’s more difficult to process the information and pay attention. Try new lunch everyday and I liked it in the lounge better.

What can BFOIT do to help you reach your goals?

1.      BFOIT Did already teach me how things work in the computer science field, so I could see if I realy want to be in this field work for computer programs.

2.      Just keep the program going and make it fun

3.      BFOIT can help me discipline myself so I can buckle down with my work. Hopefully BFOIT can also help me get a scholarship for college

4.      To help me reach my goals BFOIT can keep in touch with me until I reach college, or even until I graduate from college. I would REALLY like to meet with BFOIT through at the year(s). It would help me stay focused on the things that are important. I would REALLY REALLY

5.      probably allow more workshops like this and give us more info about college and help us decide what particular part of computers we want to pursue.

6.      update me on news and information for colleges, help us find scholarships, give contact info of the speakers

7.      continue giving me in learn more about computers

8.      formation about entering college, specifically engineering & comp sci (at Berkeley, UCB)

9.      It taught me some thing about gaming and introduced me to some people who could get me some where.

10.  It can teach me more about computers – and teach me every thing they know – thankye so much for having me in this program – I am really glad to be in the program taking computer classes. I now that it can help me a lot – Thankye so much – and I want to thank my teachers for helping me – I had a great time – I want to come next year – for taking these classes - Thankye

11.  Academic wise…BFOIT has done a lot and could do more workshops like the Barbara Austin ones because that (hour?) was very helpful to me since I don’t have that much to go till college.

12.  It would be helpful to……I don’t know! I still need to think through what my goals are. But BFOIT has definitely already helped me reach some of them.

13.  If the summer program can be extended to 4 weeks, students may have a deeper understanding of the background of computer science and may build a solid background from the skills that just learned.

14.  Help me get into a college I want to go to.

15.  Break things down about computers more.

16.  1. By continuing the program. 2. By bringing speakers to speak with us. 3. By helping me with informations about college. 4. Financial aid.

17.  Keep on what it is doing. Give more information about colleges and scholarship.

18.  I can get ahead sooner and learn the necessary skills for the computer field & the future.
